Rinku Singh – ‘6-6-6-6-6’, Remember Thy Name!
Even the Devil can come up with just a Triple 6. Rinku Singh went a step ahead and came up with five of them. Unstoppable, unattainable and completely unfathomable, the young lad from Aligarh accomplished the unachievable.
We all love a rags-to-riches story. A young man, devoid of opportunities, comes on to the big stage and leaves the country dumbstruck. There will be a lot that will be written about, even more that shall be spoken, and most of all it shall be all remembered and quoted in the times to come.
In the 16 years of its commencement, the IPL hasn’t witnessed such carnage. KKR, or more precisely Rinku Singh, came up with the biggest chase of all times as far as T20I run chases go. Five sixes off the last five balls to win a game that was almost gone. In the middle was Rinku Singh, honing his raw skill and turning it into a master craft. The left-handed hard hitter came up with 39 needed off 8 deliveries which was then left to 28 off five. Rinku even bettered Carlos Brathwaite finish from the 2016 T20 World Cup final.
What Makes the Knock So Special?
Batsmen come and batsmen go. Some leave a mark, and some do not. Some show potential and make good, others do not. Few, like KL Rahul and Riyan Parag, are even given a longer run than what they deserve. Others, like Arjun Tendulkar, are not even given a fair chance. However, to get that chance, through immense struggle, and make good on it. Not only make yourself but your team and your franchise proud, and to make the country dance to your tunes, is a feat that only one in a thousand achieve.
The match between KKR and GT had many stars. From Vijay Shankar’s 24 ball 63 runs, getting 45 in the last two overs, to Rashid Khan’s Hattrick. Not to forget the vital contributions by Venkatesh Iyer and Nitish Rana. But this was all overshadowed. There was only one star in the entire IPL galaxy on the night of 9th April 2023 and that was the humble Rinku Singh!
Rinku Singh Final Over – Ball-by-Ball Recount –
19.1 Yash Dayal to Umesh Yadav, 1 run, slower bouncer outside off, Umesh looks to pull and top-edges it in the air. It falls well short of deep midwicket.
19.2 Yash Dayal to Rinku Singh, SIX, full toss outside off, and Rinku climbs onto it! He reaches out and hammers it over extra cover for six!
19.3 Yash Dayal to Rinku Singh, SIX. Dayal offers another full toss, this time on the pads and Rinku whips it over backward square for six more.
19.4 Yash Dayal to Rinku Singh, SIX. Another full toss from Dayal and Rinku whacks it over the long-off boundary.
19.5 Yash Dayal to Rinku Singh, SIX. Dayal tries a slower one now off the back of his hand, and it sits up from a short of length. Rinku waits for it and flat-bats down the ground over long-on.
19.6 Yash Dayal to Rinku Singh, SIX. Slower short ball again, Rinku waits for it and just like he did the previous ball, flat bats it down the ground for six!
Who Said What
“When the second six happened, we thought we can actually win this game. God always gives these moments to people with a golden heart. Rinku is someone that everyone likes and I am really happy that God has given him this very moment,” Venkatesh Iyer said.
“Rinku himself didn’t think he could pull off five sixes. Right after he’d done the unthinkable, he revealed that his plan was to ‘react to every ball’. This match is going to be remembered for the ‘Lord Rinku’ show. Obviously, everyone ruled us out before the last two overs but obviously to come back from there and win is something that won’t happen every day. We’re going to cherish this game for a very long time,” Iyer said.
“This was the bat I used in Syed Mushtaq Ali and in the last season as well. I never wanted to give it, and when he asked for a bat, I just told him go and pick one for you, and he picked this one, deep down I knew this he will pick this bat only and now the bat belongs to him. I have never seen anyone, who is as kindhearted and pure as Rinku. We only play such kind of innings once or twice in our life, I might never play it. I am so happy for Rinku.” said Nitish Rana.
The Man Himself – Rinku Singh
“To be honest I was not thinking much. Just reacting to every ball. Never thought I would hit five sixes. I just kept hitting. I had the belief. And we won the match,” Rinku Singh said at the post-match presentation.
“I had the inner belief that I can do it because I had also played a similar innings last year against Lucknow. There also I had such a belief and today, too, I showed that belief. Rana bhai told me: “belief rakhiyo, aakhri tak kheliyo (keep the belief, stay till the end),” Rinku said.
Umesh had similar words of advice for Rinku. “Bhaiya also told me, ‘laga Rinku, sochiyo mat (hit it, don’t think).”
31 Runs scored by Kolkata Knight Riders in the last over, the highest any team has managed in the 20th over to win a men’s T20 chase.
4 Batters to have hit five sixes in an over in the IPL: Chris Gayle hit five in a row off Rahul Sharma in 2012, Rahul Tewatia against Sheldon Cottrell in 2020, and Ravindra Jadeja off Harshal Patel in 2021 were the previous three instances. Rinku Singh becomes the fourth player on this list after his feat against Yash Dayal.
29 Runs needed for Kolkata Knight Riders in the final over for a win against Gujarat Titans. These are the most runs any team has successfully chased in the 20th over of a men’s T20.
3 Successful 200-plus chases by Knight Riders in the IPL, the joint second-most for a team, drawing level with Chennai Super Kings (3). Only Punjab Kings with four 200-plus chases are ahead of the two.
4 Hat-tricks for Rashid Khan in T20s – the most by any bowler in the format. Rashid was level with five other bowlers on three hat-tricks prior to this game: Amit Mishra, Mohammad Sami, Andre Russell, Andrew Tye and Imran Tahir.
69 Runs conceded by Yash Dayal in his four overs. These are the second-most runs conceded by a bowler in an IPL match. It’s just behind Basil Thampi’s 70 for SRH against RCB in 2018.
