Chennai Super Kings sent temperatures soaring at the Chepauk with MS Dhoni hitting two huge sixes in the final over of the first innings. The chants of ‘Dhoni Dhoni’ could have been heard perhaps a few miles away from the ground. The slow and sticky wicket of Chennai lived up to its reputation with first Ravi Bishnoi and then Moeen Ali creating havoc in the opposition camp. CSK Vs LSG IPL Match turned out to be a good one for the hosts as CSK beat LSG by 12 runs.
Chennai Super Kings Innings Summary
It was an exhibition of power hitting by the Chennai openers – Ruturaj Gaikwad and Conway. They absolutely mauled the LSG attack in the powerplay. It was great entertainment for the crowd who were watching CSK live in action after a long time. Gaikwad hammered K Gowtham for three sixes in the fifth over and that was followed by another expensive over from Mark Wood in which the hosts fetched 19 runs. CSK had 79 on the board in 6 overs of the powerplay.
Ruturaj made a huge impact in his first game at Chepauk. It was back-to-back fifties for the opener. CSK continued to have a ball with Conway also getting into the act with two sixes off Krunal Pandya. But Ravi Bishnoi entered the attack and removed Gaikwad immediately. Another great knock from Gaekwad came to an end. The rest of the batters including Dube and Rayudu contributed a bit here and there with the run-rate slowing down considerably after the openers departed. In the end, Ravi Bishnoi picked up three crucial wickets and one wonders why he was held back till the 10th over of the innings.
The crowd went absolutely mad in the final over with Dhoni smashing two sixes off his first two balls. He tried a third but mistimed one to get caught. CSK scored 217 in their designated 20 overs. That would the highest total of the season till now.
Lucknow Super Giants Innings Summary –
The Captain and Opener KL Rahul was pretty much only a spectator as Kyle Mayers went bonkers smashing fours and sixes at will. There was a stand-and-deliver style to his batting, much like the Universal Boss Chris Gayle. That made tough shots look ridiculously easy courtesy great hand-eye coordination. This will surely give LSG some healthy selection headaches. Their regular opener Quinton de Kock will be available for selection in the next game. CSK didn’t help their cause with some sloppiness in the field as LSG made 80 in the powerplay.
Moeen Ali Takes the Game Away from LSG
Moeen Ali bowled the final over of the powerplay to dismiss Mayers for a quick 53. The next batter Deepak Hooda picked out Ben Stokes at wide long-on. KL Rahul then found Ruturaj Gaikwad at deep midwicket. Hooda and Rahul were both not to the pitch of the ball but went through with the shot. From 79 for 0, LSG slipped to 82 for 3. All in a matter of two overs. Moeen bowled an excellent spell of 4 overs where he sent back the top 4 LSG batters by giving a mere 20 runs. Towards the end, Pooran tried to make a match of it by hitting a few humungous blows, but the LSG camp had lost their steam with the run-rate climbing up. The hosts were finally able to get two crucial points as LSG went down by 12 runs.
CSK Vs LSG IPL Match Preview
Lucknow Super Giants are the first visiting team this season to arrive in Chennai. They come armed with an in-form top-order that ripped Delhi Capitals’ attack to shreds. It remains to be seen if they can repeat a similar performance on a relatively slower wicket and set an example as to how to play and win at Chennai.
Spin will Dominate the Proceedings
Chepauk is a venue where spinners have been incredibly effective. CSK and LSG are teams with at least two left-handers in their top-order. These two will have equal challenges in store. CSK have two left-arm spinners (Ravindra Jadeja and Mitchell Santner) while LSG are also equipped with at least one spinner (Ravi Bishnoi) who will turn the ball into the left handers.
