Rishabh Pant was in the House and somehow nothing else really mattered. The first innings of the Delhi Capitals Vs Gujarat Titans IPL Match was underway when crowd sent up a huge roar. The lad from Meerut, in a white T Shirt and shaded sunglasses smiled shyly from the VIP arena. He glanced at the screen and waved to the roaring crowd. Thumb bandaged, arms wounded, a slight support sought while walking, but the smile never left the face; the charm never ceased. DC’s 13th Man was in his proper place, and he was welcomed with open arms! Saurav Ganguly, in the dugout, looked at the TV screen with pride in his eyes and a slight smile on his lips. His boy was back, and he would soon be ready to roar. In the history of cricket there has never been another like Rishabh Pant, nor will there ever be!
As far as the cricket went, GT were successful in chasing 162, though not without some hiccups. Delhi lost their first home game of the season, their second of IPL 2023, a feat they would surely not be proud of. Hardik Pandya’s men will take back two crucial points thanks to some sluggish batting from Delhi’s top order. It was a terrific display of finishing skills from Miller accompanied by a mature innings from Sai Sudharsan that got Gujarat home in the 19th over, despite a fairly tight bowling display from the Delhi Capitals.
Delhi Capitals Innings Summary –
Mohammed Shami hit the nail on the head in his new-ball spell. Lovely seam away from David Warner from over the wicket, kissing the stump without removing the bail. Seam in from around the wicket. The figures of 3-0-29-2 could have been three had the bail trickled off when Mohammed Shami hit the wicket first ball of the match. However, he took out Prithvi Shaw and Mitchell Marsh with the new ball. DC were reduced to 42 for 2 in five overs.
It was a mixed bag of an innings from David Warner. He struggled against the new ball but somehow got some momentum going. Then when it looked like he was settling in, he chopped Alzarri Joseph on. This track had some seam movement, uneven bounce and inconsistent pace. DC were 67 for 3 in 8.2 overs, Warner went for 37 off 32.
Everything about the first ball from Alzarri Joseph to Rilee Rossouw was perfect. It kicked off just short of a length, the line was middle and off, and took the shoulder of the bat. Even the point fielder was at least 6-8 yards in the circle. And that is the only reason why the catch was taken. Delhi was reduced to 67 for 4.
Thanks to Axar Patel’s 36 off 22 balls, Delhi Capitals will take the 162 at the end, but was still the lowest target of IPL 2023 so far. GT were been superb with the ball, especially Alazarri Joseph with his aggression in the middle overs. Rashid Khan, who came in after the 10th over, got figures of 4-0-31-3.
Sarfaraz Khan said in the post-match interview that because of the unseasonal rain leading up to the match, the conditions have changed. The ball moved sideways, and also went up and down.
Gujarat Titans Innings Summary –
Gujarat Titans started their innings by Saha welcoming Khaleel with a couple of fours and a six in the first over. Shubman Gill also started off with a couple of boundaries off Mukesh Kumar. The Titans were on their way, well up to the mark with the required run-rate. It took a Nortje’s sheer pace, in his first ball, to knock Saha over for 14 before Gill had his stumps rattled too!
Khaleel Ahmed ended the powerplay with a beauty to keep DC in the game. Around the wicket, hard length, holding its line against the angle, and Hardik Pandya was squared up. It was edged through to the keeper. GT were 54 for 3.
The inexperienced duo of Sai Sudarshan and Vijay Shankar attempted to rescue the run-chase. However, the run-rate took a hit. A few good overs from Mukesh Kumar, Mitchell Marsh and Kuldeep Yadav kept the Titans at bay. DC conceded only 29 runs in the four overs after the powerplay.
The hero of the Gujarat’s innings – Sai Sudarshan was not even in the Playing Eleven in the previous game. He got subbed in because Kane Williamson was injured. Sudharsan went pretty much a run a ball most of his innings, but then hit two sixes off Anrich Nortje – both behind square, using his pace – to finish at 62 in 48 balls. Miller chipped in with a useful 31 in 16 balls. GT reached their target of 163 with 10 balls to spare.
