The people of Bangalore made sure that this match was a sell-out much in advance. They queued up outside the stadium hours before the match. All they wanted were two things: A win and runs from Kohli. They got to see both! The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) beat the Mumbai Indians (MI) by 8 wickets in a Sunday-double-header. All eyes were on star batsman Virat Kohli, who made an impressive return to form. RCB Vs Mumbai Indians IPL Match delivered to its promise of being a thrilling encounter with RCB being the winning side, and Virat Kohli carrying the bat through.
Mumbai Indians Innings Summary –
After a couple of quiet overs to start with, RCB struck by getting rid of Ishan Kishan early. Attempting to smash Siraj, Ishan mistimed one that landed in the hands of the fielder at third man boundary. In the very next over, Cameron Green, making his IPL debut, was cleaned up by Reece Topley who bowled an excellent in swinging yorker. Siraj, given a third straight over could have gobbled up Rohit as well with the MI skipper growing frustrated over the run rate. He mistimed a pull shot completely but Siraj and Dinesh Karthik both went for the catch, only to collide and hand Rohit a lifeline. However, the skipper couldn’t make it count and departed in the very next over by edging Akash Deep behind to the keeper.
Topley bowled well and came up with a good effort in the field as well, but he dived in the fine leg region to stop the ball and was seen holding his arm. He was in serious pain as he went off the field. He was ruled out for the entire match.
Tilak Verma Sets the RCB Stage on Fire
One of the success stories of last season, despite MI’s struggles, was Tilak Varma taking it upon himself to rescue his side. He played some gorgeous strokes tonight and looked a class apart. Nehal Wadhera did struggle but smashed successive sixes to add 50 with Tilak before finding the fielder. While MI keep losing wickets, Tilak Varma has stood tall tonight.
There was madness from Tilak right at the end even though he lost Tim David very early at the death. Mumbai Indians were in no position to get even 160 tonight, let alone 171 but this young man absolutely smashed the opposition.
RCB Innings Summary –
MI start their defense with two left-arm swing bowlers, Jason Behrendorff and Arshad Khan. The RCB openers soon figured out they can cut the swing by charging at them. Both Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli did that to good effect. They nailed the powerplay with the ball and they have done the same with the bat. Faf du Plessis looked in glorious touch as he smashed a couple of sixes and Virat on the other hand took on Jofra Archer. RCB charged to 53 for 0 in six overs. Jofra Archer was left with just too much to do.
Faf du Plessis Dominates the RCB Chase
It was an almost-perfect evening for Faf du Plessis. He took a stunning catch running back, had a wide call overturned, and made a mockery of what MI might have thought was a total that may give them a chance. After bringing up his fifty off 29 balls, he smacks another six off the 30th. He charged at the swing bowlers, used his touch against the quicker ones, and took apart the first off spinner thrown at him.
The MI carnage continued as Kohli brought up a fifty as well. The openers added more than 100 for the opening wicket. Rohit’s ploy to bring Archer back didn’t work. Though RCB lost Faf and Karthik, Virat and Maxwell made sure that not only their team went across the line but did so with a healthy run-rate on the board.
