Steve Smith will be the captain again for Australia in the Fourth and Final Test against India. Pat Cummins has opted to stay back in Australia as his mother is extremely unwell. Cummins left for Sydney following the Second Test in Delhi to be with his mother Martha who is in palliative care with breast cancer.
Smith captained Australia in the Indore Test in Cummins’ absence and the team secured a famous victory. Apart from Nathan Lyon’s eight-wicket haul, Smith’s leadership also came in for a lot of praise. He marshalled his resources expertly. Smith did not allow the Indian batters to settle into any sort of rhythm with his changes in bowling and the field.
Steve Smith is a Sharp Captain
The Australians lost both the Test matches in Nagpur and Delhi against the Indians when Pat Cummins was captain. However, their fortunes turned around in the Third Test when Steve Smith led the side. Smith has also achieved previous success in India when he was captain, and the Aussies won a match. Smith is known for being on-his-toes at all times. He makes quick decisions and keeps the opposition confused. If it had not been for the sandpaper-gate controversy, Smith would have still been the captain.
The Aussies have qualified for the WTC Final in June in England with this win in Indore. India will be looking to win their next match in order to qualify.
It is still unclear if Cummins, named the ODI captain of Australia last year, will be available for the three-match ODI series against India which follows the Ahmedabad Test. The fourth Test will be played from March 9 to 13 while the ODIs start on March 17.
