The much-anticipated series – Border Gavaskar Series – between India and Australia is underway. Surya Kumar Yadav and KS Bharat made their Test debut in the First Test at Nagpur. Todd Murphy also got the Baggy Green from Australia. Surya Kumar Yadav’s Test debut came at the expense of the Indian team picking him over the in-form Shubman Gill.
Surya Kumar Yadav will wear Cap No. 305 as KS Bharat earned Cap No. 304 for India.
Surya Kumar Yadav Test debut was made possible as Shreyas Gill is injured and out of the first Test. Surya has a great record in the domestic circuit. He has played 73 Ranji games with an average of over 40. He is a wildcard entry in the squad, playing the role that Rishabh Pant was designated to play at in the lower middle order.
At the toss, Captain Rohit Sharma sais – ‘We know the importance of the series, but we also understand it’s about winning one session at a time. It’s a long series. Three spinners, two seamers, Bharat and Suryakumar Yadav are debuting.’
Surya’s Long Wait for Debut
While there was lot of speculation about Surya Kumar Yadav Test debut, the news was confirmed before the start of the match. Former India coach, Ravi Shastri joined the team huddle presented Surya with his cap. He was in the Indian squad during the England tour in 2021 but did not make his debut with competition for places.
It is worth noting that Shubman Gill has scored five hundreds in all formats since December, but is not in the Indian Playing XI. Gill recently scored a double hundred in the ODI format while was seen in superb touch during the Sri Lanka and New Zealand series.
